Phil Betterly, Head Coach

Philip Betterly enters his second season as an assistant coach at Frostburg State University, where he works with hitters and catchers, and assists with the recruitment of players.

Prior to Frostburg State, he served as a volunteer assistant coach at Methodist University for the 2010 season, where he worked primarily with hitters and catchers. He is also a 2009 graduate of Methodist where he was a three-year letter winner as a catcher, outfielder and designated hitter.

Philip spent the summer of 2011 as an assistant coach for the Florence Red Wolves in the Coastal Plain League. During the summer of 2010, he was an assistant coach for the New Market Rebels. He has also worked numerous college camps, showcases and clinics throughout the Mid-Atlantic States.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Methodist University and is currently working on his Master’s degree in administration and supervision.

Originally from Bristow, Virginia, he attended Brentsville District High School, in Nokesville, Virginia. His personal interests include playing golf and church softball.
Assistant Coaches

Brian Willis is entering his first year on staff at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. A former pitcher for the Braves, Willis works primarily with the Braves’ pitchers while also assisting in recruitment of players and field maintenance.

A native of Hope Mills, NC, Willis played four years at UNC-P. During his stay at UNC-P, Willis helped lead the Braves to their first PBC Conference Championship and there first ever NCAA Tournament appearance. During his UNC-P career, Willis was awarded first-team PBC Relief pitcher and second team ABCA All-Southeast Region team honoree during 2010. In 2011, Willis was named to the second team PBC all conference, second team Daktronics All southeast second team, as well as NCWBA third team all region as a starting pitcher.

Academically, Willis was named to the Chancellors’ list twice, and named to the Peach Belt Conference bronze scholar list three times. Willis graduated from UNC-P in May of 2011 with a bachelor of science in physical education, and is currently pursuing his master’s degree in physical education while assisting with the Braves’ coaching staff.

Dan Shafferman attended John Dickinson High School located in Wilmington, Delaware. He played three years of varsity football and four years of varsity baseball. Earned 1st All-state honors in baseball his Junior and Senior years.

After High School he attended George Mason University on a baseball scholarship. He played four years under head coach Bill Brown playing Catcher and Outfield during those four seasons. Enjoys drawing, video games, the outdoors, and the game of baseball. Parents are Christine and Dan Schafferman and he also has a younger brother Christian, 19, who attends Del Tech Community College in Wilmington, De.
